I just bought a wonderful microfiber cover blanket for my bed, and since I live with my cat it got me thinking: what is a good cat proof bed cover?
I wondered if the blanket would be a good enough protection for my mattress, besides it looking gorgeous. Will it endure my cat’s claws or will it become full of fur? As I had these questions on my mind I did some research online and below I present what I’ve discovered.
Cat scratches are something every cat owner is well used to. If the scratches are on the skin they are easily mended: human skin simply regenerates itself. True it can hurt a little but after a while, the skin heals and there are usually no scars left.
When you stop and think about it you have to admit: it is amazing how cats get away with scratching and biting us, often times causing even blood bleeding, and we still do everything to serve them and love them none the less. It is God’s sense of humor to create such contradictory creatures.
So what happens when a cat picks a spot in your home for her favorite scratching activity? Whatever she chose to scratch soon becomes a destroyed thing – unless you protect it somehow.
When you buy a mattress or a bed you would normally expect it to last for years. A good mattress or bed should last you a minimum of 10 years.
A good mattress can be really expensive and if it is a combination of a bed and mattress the price can easily reach thousand(s) of dollars. So it is very understandable that you want to protect that bed, especially if you are a cat owner.
I have a couple of wrapping mattress covers for protecting my Dormeo mattress – which feels awesome on my back but for some reason, I love sleeping on the couch :). But those wrappers are merely sheets and they protect only from dust. When you have a cat you want much stronger protection than just a sheet wrapper around your bed.
Best Cat Proof Material For Bed Cover
So far I have discovered two or three materials that are good for cat claw protection. Let me just briefly tell you what material not to use:
Leather Is Not A Good Material As A Cat Scratch Protector
This is pretty surprising as you would think leather to be quite durable material. And it is – just not for claw punctures.
I’ve seen so many people advise how leather is one of the best cat claw proof fabric! It is just not true. It may be the best cat hair proof material, waterproof or stain proof material – but not more than that when it comes to cats.
I have an office chair made from faux leather and let me tell you: when my cat Puffy punctures it the tiny hole just remains and it all adds up with time. One tiny hole at a time and it all starts to show up and there is no way to fix it. Cat claw holes or cat scratches once done they stay there for good. And it’s not a pretty sight.
If your cat decides the leather covered piece of furniture is its favorite scratching place then you can consider it already destroyed – if protected only by the leather material.
Now it is arguable if you get a thick, 100% genuine leather if cat’s claws will be able to puncture it but with most leather furniture please know that it is not as cat proof as you will read everywhere. There are plenty of videos on youtube that show how to fix a cat scratch on leather – they exist for a reason.
Besides leather, any fabric with an open weave is bad for cat owners, like chenilles or wovens.
Best Cat Scratch Proof Fabric
For what I’ve found online it seems that tightly woven materials are best for enduring cat claws.
- Microfiber (including microfleece, microsuede)
This is a synthetic, ultra fine fiber. One of the reasons microfiber is cat claw resistant is that it is so tightly woven that there are no nits for claws to catch on the weave.
Other features that make microfiber the best furniture material for cat owners:
- Cat hair is very easy to clean off
- Highly waterproof (liquids linger on the surface for a while as they can’t be absorbed immediately due to the tightly woven fiber).
- Highly stain resistant, again the very high density of the fiber enables this. If you react fast and clean the spill you will avoid any stains.
So, besides being the best cat proof material, microfiber feels heavenly soft, smooth and looks just as good and is easy maintenance.
Gorgeous Oversized Microfleece Reversible Bedspread
This is a stunning bedspread and it comes in many, many absolutely gorgeous designs – I suggest you go check them out, the designs are SO beautiful! It will be a perfect bed protector from cat scratches as the material is microfleece and it is such a beautiful bedspread. It is also oversized which means it will provide perfect bed coverage.
Both beautiful and practical this quilted reversible bedspread will be such a great addition to your home.
- Velvet
Many cat owners have chosen velvet for their furniture or were surprised how durable it turned out to be when it comes to cat claws. Velvet may seem fragile because it has a very soft feel, but it is a very thick/dense woven fabric which gives good protection from cat claws.
Another thing that makes velvet cat friendly is that it is very easy to clean from cat hair. Because the fabric threads are cut short it does not trap cat hair and releases it more easily.
Cat owners also have noticed that velvet is not very attractive for cats to scratch on. It is because velvet has a very smooth surface and cats need something more rugged to scratch on (or trim their nails which scratching actually is).
So besides looking gorgeous and very rich velvet is a practical choice as a home material for cat owners.
Velvet Cat Proof Mattress Protector
As already explained velvet is a great material for homes with cats. This set comes in many colors and it protects the mattress and has a bed cover together with pillowcases, so it’s a complete cat proof set for your bedroom.
Velvet is a very much enjoyed material by cat owners as it actually feels so soft and cozy, just like your beloved cat.
You would feel like royalty sleeping in this softness, feeling very comfortable and warm. I am absolutely sure the cat will adore this set so much that it wouldn’t want to destroy it :))
- Heavy denim
This may also be a good material for cat proof bed cover if you want to sew one, but the people who have had heavy denim as a bed protector are few so this is not quite confirmed. Based on my experience, even standard denim is an extremely durable material, let alone heavy denim, so most likely this will work.
Below I have hand-picked the best cat proof bed covers that you can get and start using them right away:
Puncture Proof Mattress Cover
Waterproof And Cat Claw Proof Blanket
This is a wonderful double-sided cat claw proof blanket that is waterproof. It is made 100% of polyester – the same basic fabric for microfiber, therefore a cat should not feel attracted to scratch such a material.
It comes in light grey and dark grey colors so you can choose your favorite one.
It is high quality made with special accent given to the water-resistant feature.
You can use it on all kinds of furniture at home, like a sofa, couch, chair or bed, this is one truly versatile cat blanket.
The colors are very neutral and will match any home decor.
It comes in 2 sizes: 60″ x 50″ and this is the popular version, but I would prefer the larger size: 80″ x 60″.
Cat Scratch Bed Protector
This blanket is specially made for pets. The top side is made of microfleece and the bottom has a sherpa lining. What these materials serve for is this:
- Microfleece is an excellent water-resistant material that feels extremely soft
- The sherpa lining offers warmth and comfort
The strongest feature of this cat blanket is that it is waterproof (or better said pee proof) so if you have a kitten or an older cat it will make a perfect match.
One of the things that make microfleece good for cats is that it doesn’t have the texture required to sharpen her claws. Therefore a cat is not attracted to scratch a microfleece blanket but rather enjoy its softness and warmth.
Bedding For Cats With Claws
I love how this bamboo mattress protector looks, so fresh and clean. Not only will it protect your mattress surface from your cat but it will provide an awesome look combined with an increased softness of your bed.
Beautiful and practical, this would definitely be my choice for a cat scratch mattress protector.
For maximum protection of your bed, you need a cat-proof bed frame: basically any hard material bed frame like wood, plastic or metal.
You should place a scratch post near any object you want your cat to be distracted from. The scratch post will naturally attract your cat and it will help in preserving your bed from its claws.
