Cat Proof Bed Frame – How To Choose The Right One

Cat Proof Bed Frame

If you have a cat, especially an indoor-only cat, then you have probably noticed that your cat absolutely must scratch something in the house. If you are lucky that will be a specially dedicated scratching post for this purpose.

But cats are weird forms of life that often defy logic (human at least) and once they start scratching a certain type of furniture it is very hard to stop them.

So it can happen that your cat chooses the bed frame for sharpening its claws. Some people wonder why is my cat clawing the bed and if you want to know a bit more about this cat behavior then you can briefly check my short post about it.

So if your cat has destroyed your bed frame or you simply want to get a new one then these are the best bed frame suggestions I could find and gather in one place.

I would like to divide this problem into 2 parts:

  • you already have a bed frame that you like and your cat has started scratching it
  • you need a new bed frame that will be cat proof

Part I: How To Prevent Your Cat From Scratching Your Bed Frame

The most radical measure you can take is to simply lock your bedroom door to keep the cat out – but this is truly hard to do with such persistent creatures as cats. If your bed frame is really an expensive one then this is the best way to protect it, fully cat proof.

As it is one of the sweetest pleasures in life sleeping with your warm, purring and fluffy cat it can be understandable that you want your cat to have access to the bedroom.

What you could do is let your cat in the bedroom only when you are present so that you are aware of what your cat is doing, and this can be easily done with a microchip cat door and this is my favorite one. It’s a great solution where you get to keep the bed frame free from cat scratches and you get to cuddle with your cat on the bed.

If your cat has started scratching the bed frame, the first thing to make sure is that your cat has enough scratching posts in the home, especially in the room where your bed is. You may also add catnip to the scratching posts for directing your cat’s attention to them. If your cat has already trimmed its nails it is less likely that it will be attracted to the bed frame.

You may add big decorative pillows on the bed if your cat is scratching the headboard, this way you’ll still have aesthetic look and save the bed at the same time. Adding a protective blanket over the headboard is an option if you have a plain headboard so you won’t mind covering it.

If your cat is scratching under the bed then in this post you will find a few practical ways to stop this.

If your cat allows it you can put silicone caps on your cat’s nails like these ones (they are not expensive so you may want to try them). Of course, trimming your cat’s nails is a must-do every 2 weeks or more often.

If none of the above works for your cat then some people found out that a cedar wood log works wonders for cat scratching. It may be the wood texture of the cedar that has proven to be very successful in redirecting a cat from scratching furniture in the home. To get one you can try driving around in your neighborhood to see if there is a store near you that sell cedar wood logs or you can choose the easy way and simply order wood logs online:

As surprisingly as it may seem, it is worth trying and if it doesn’t work – well you can always make a small firepit and burn this wood, so nothing’s wasted here!

A few more useful things you can do to cat proof your bed frame are explained in this post – I have gathered this information from a Facebook group of cat owners, they had so many tips on a similar subject that I had to put them in one place.

Part II: How To Choose A Cat Proof Bed Frame

When shopping for a bed frame, there are several things to consider. First, you should consider the size of the bed you want. Second, you should consider durability, comfort, safety features, and storage space. Finally, you should consider the type of style you prefer.

When choosing a bed frame that will be resistant to cat claws the first thing you need to pay attention to is the bed frame material: it needs to be something that a cat can’t damage.

Luckily such material does exist: it is a metal bed frame. The best thing about a metal bed frame is that it is a high quality material, sturdy, very durable and most importantly immune to cat claws. In this case, a cat will not even be interested in scratching a metal bed frame so the problem is cut from the root.

In addition to the perfect bed frame for cat owners, the metal bed frame, it is a good idea to choose an elevated bed frame. The reason for this is that it makes cleaning under the bed a breeze and we all know how cats love to stuff toys under the bed.

Here are some suggestions for good cat proof metal bed frames:

This is a simple but very functional bed frame that has a lot of great features. If you’re looking to make life as easy as possible then this is definitely a bed frame to consider having.

First of all, this bed frame is absolutely resistant to cat claws, as it is made of metal, no worries about your cat destroying it in any way possible. Furthermore, the frame itself is very smooth, with no pointy or sharp edges so there will be no issues with catching the fabric of your bedding.

As you can see there is a lot of space underneath the bed, this will give your cat a mysterious space to be explored or to hide in it, sleep and feel safe. Great for playing too! It will be like a little cave for your pet and if you add a bed skirt your car will totally love it, especially when she has done something bad – at least my cat loves hiding under the bed where I can’t reach her. You know that your cat needs such a hiding place! đŸ™‚

The fact that this bed is elevated is one of the best things about it. You can store many things under the bed, it will free space in your closet and hide away things that you don’t use often. For small apartments, this will help you so much in saving space.

Another bonus is that it will make cleaning under the bed so easy and with a cat you have to pay attention to how will things in your home affect the cleaning.

I have to emphasize there are many different options for this bed frame:

  • various heights for this bed, you can choose between 14, 16 or 18 inches
  • different sizes: king, queen, twin… so make sure you choose the product that you need
  • different strength: regular and heavy duty
  • different colors: black and white version

People have described this bed as very quiet, with no noise or squeaking which is a very important thing for a good sleep when you have pets jumping on and off the bed.

The frame itself is sturdy (you can choose your preferred strength) and I quote a buyer: “holds me and my husband (300+ pounds) no problem”. People have described it as very easy and simple to put together, with no tools required! It’s also light and easy to fold up for transport (very good for a van too as it saves space).

Warning: some people made a remark about a mattress slipping but they solved it with a rug gripper pad underneath the mattress or cargo straps. On the other hand, I’ve read reviews of people with dogs jumping on the bed having no problems with the mattress slipping. The bed frame does not have a lip for holding the mattress fully in place so I thought this was good to mention. Also, it is best to use a carpet underneath the bed for maximum avoiding of wobbling.

A major benefit of using the Zinus frame/mattress combination is that the sturdiness of the bed frame allows you to avoid using a box spring for the mattresses. The mattress will keep the shape quite well without a box spring.

The Zinus brand has many high quality (metal) bed frames with affordabe prices, I suggest you also check this bed frame from them.

This bed frame looks so beautiful and elegant. One thing that distinguishes it from other bed frames are the rounded corners, which give the bed frame a unique look and are practical as you won’t bump into sharp corners.

A cat would love the hiding space under the bed. Now I must say you won’t be able to run a Roomba under the bed because of the bars around the bed (unless you place the robot inside the area) but the beautiful design is worth it. A point plus is that your cat will have a barrier for rolling cat balls or toys under the bed – which helps cleaning!

Since the bed frame is made of metal it is 100% cat proof.

Here are all the pro and con features of this bed frame:

  • It is a heavy duty bed frame that can hold a lot of weight
  • Strurdy enough to use it without a box spring, but you have the option to get a box spring for a little extra height as it is a bit low to the ground
  • This is a strong bed frame for larger people, or those who will be rough with the bed as it is steel construction
  • The metal slats enable so much more durability over wooden ones
  • Easy to put together as it has a lock mechanism for assembly and directions to read – tools are required
  • A silent bed frame: it doesnt squeak or make any noise even in rough night activity
  • It is best placed over a carpet as on tile, wood or concrete it may slide
  • The design ensures a stable platform, there are no movements of the bed frame once assembeled
  • You may want to buy a non-slip mat or tape for your bedframe before putting a mattress on top of it and especially for sleeprs that toss and turn a lot during the night
  • Under-bed storage is possible for small bins (you can choose between 9 or 12 inches height) but it is not easy to access because of the bottom rim going around the bed

This is a great platform bed for cat owners that want to have a durable, cat resistant bed frame and still have a very modern looking bed.

If you have problems with your cat scratching under the bed or destroying the box spring then a full top to bottom bed frame is the perfect solution for you.

I have found this beauty and I love the design as well as the practical side of it for cat owners.

It has a truly lovely storage space, very cozy looking, very warm look. Great for people who love to read in bed, or take notes, check their phone as they can put books and papers on a hand reach distance. Basically all that you might need during a night you cat put close to you so you won’t have to bump around the room in dark to find them.

You also get the two awesome wicker baskets to get you started on your storage path :).

It’s a great bed for small spaces because of the storage space it provides and for nice cat ladies for the good looks and books at your hand reach. Here is a short testimony on the quality of the bed.
