When first I got my very own cat, as an adult, it was in my brand new apartment. Which I kept sick clean. I cleaned every morning and even some weekends were reserved for nothing but cleaning my sweet little place under the sun. It was hard earned with my own two hands and I loved it to pieces.
Then I met my first black and white cat which I took home and needless to say – everything changed. I tried to keep law and order but as every cat owner knows very well – it just doesn’t work with cats.
Its little paws went slowly from the hallway to the room, the couch, the kitchen counter and – the bed. It is unbelievable how you can’t deny your cat anything – cats do what they want literally. They just melt you down with their sweetness and softness and those big round eyes.
My first cat died tragically at only 9 months of age and my second cat, my Puffy, luckily causes no major problems with her claws. But her hair dropped all around my apartment is another story…
I particularly don’t like her paws and hair on my bed so below is everything I found out about cat proof bedding: starting from claw proofing to cat hair proofing, to choosing the right bed sheets and duvets and blankets to waterproof bedding. It did take me a whole week of research and writing!
Cat Proof Bed Sheets (Cat Claws)
Obviously, you can’t have 100% cat proof bed sheets. But there are sheets that hold up better than others and with some additional measures, you can have bed sheets that last for years and a cat on your bed. Sleeping with a cat is one of the sweetest things in life :).
What cat owners have noticed is that these types of sheets don’t shred as easily as higher thread count sheets. From their experience, they hold up the best against cat claws.
I have to add that it also depends on the cat and its claws. Make sure you cut them regularly so they won’t be as sharp and with big hooks.
Here are a few scratch proof bed sheets which I would consider buying:
300 Thread Count, Percale, 100% Cotton, Cat Claw Proof Bedding
These are 300 thread count percale sheets (percale is known for its longevity and crisp feel). The 300 thread count of percale for cotton material is the optimal count, it means heavier woven thread resulting in a more durable and thick fabric (the higher count is for finer yarns). Which is exactly the kind of fabric you need for protecting your bed from cat claws.
Tightly woven cotton sheets are highly recommended for cat lovers who allow their cats on the bed (is there a cat owner that doesn’t do that!?).
From the reviews, people have described these sheets as:
- lightweight
- durable
- very cool
- comfortable
- crisp feel (I love this one, no better feeling than going into a fresh, crispy bed)
- thick (most sheets nowadays are thin)
As they are made of natural cotton they may come out a little wrinkled out of the dryer but as long as you don’t use them for guests you should be fine considering all the other qualities they possess.
Another plus is that they don’t retain cat hair so they are perfect as cat hair proof bed sheets too. Here is a good review on this particular issue.
Tear Resistant Bed Sheets
The main quality of these sheets is their thickness and that is something we cat owners need in our bedrooms when it comes to cat claws.
Below I have separated the most useful characteristics of these cotton sheets, all coming from reviews left by customers that bought them:
- Made of Supima long-staple cotton (check the link above to find out its specialty)
- Super thick and heavy sheets
- Soft and comfortable
- Long-lasting as they are made of quality material
- They become softer with each wash
- Airy and breathable
- Deep pockets
- You can pick your favorite color as there is quite a variety of colors
I really liked the reviews of this product and so I can honestly recommend it as does this regular person with a verified purchase and an honest testimony of the great quality of these sheets.
Cat Proof Duvet Cover Set – Absolutely Gorgeous Velvet Covers
Cat Friendly Bedding: 100% Turkish Cotton Flannel Sheet Set
If you have a cat scratching bed sheets then you may want to consider these beautiful bed sheets. They come in a variety of colors, with flowers and without so you may want to check them out.
Best Sheets For Cat Claws – Flannel Bed Sheet Set
These are flannel sheets that give solid protection from cat claws. They are not so great with cat hair but the majority of the fur falls after a machine wash so they are quite good bed sheets for cat scratches.
The greatest thing about flannel sheets is that they are very soft and cozy. You may think they are too warm for summer but it is not true: they are warm in winter but breathable and light for summer. So you can use them the whole year round – unless you are one of those people who are too “hot” 🙂
These flannel sheet sets (one bed sheet, 1 fitted sheet and 2 pillowcases) come in many colors and are made of Turkish cotton.
Cat Printed Flannel Sheets
Microfiber Tear Proof Bed Sheets
In a cold season, you can use a microfleece blanket as a bed sheet. Microfleece is one of the best cat claw proof fabric (cats can’t really sharpen their nails on it, due to the tightly woven fabric that doesn’t catch on their claws, so they avoid scratching it). Not only will you feel soft and warm but your cat will love it too. A blanket like this will make a perfect snuggling nest both for you and your cat.
I personally have a microfiber blanket on top of my bed sheet and the first few times I laid on it I felt like a baby in a womb: it was so soft and warm that I truly had a hard time getting out of bed 🙂
Here are the best features of this blanket:
- Incredibly soft and cozy
- Warm
- Comfortable
- Fuzzy
- Perfect bedding for cats with claws
It seems that this is also the most perfect blanket for attracting cats so you may have to fight for it with your cat!
In case you have some favorite bed sheets that are delicate but you still want to use them with your cat around, you can get plastic claw protectors like these ones:
Cats have claws for a reason. They use them for defense, for holding on objects, for jumping and landing safely. So I would use nail caps like these for indoor cats only and only when trimming your cat’s claws doesn’t help.
I would also allow a time pause between using 2 sets (one set should last you more or less a month). You know how human nails start to deteriorate if they are always covered with nail polish? Nails need to breathe no matter how strange it sounds.
However, if you absolutely can’t handle your cat’s claws destroying furniture or scratching you in your sleep then I would definitely try these. Most cat owners claim cats don’t mind them at all.
Besides giving you the protection from claws they look so awesome! I would even get these just to take a few pictures of my cat with these on :). At least for those Christmas photos!
