Today I came across a very interesting discussion on Facebook where cat owners each shared an unknown fact about cats, something that most people and even cat owners themselves are not aware of.
As I liked it very much I decided to share some of the most interesting observations from this group. I think you’ll be surprised and entertained just as much as I was.
So let’s dive in:
The Mystery of Cat Genetics
Calico cats, with their tri-color coat of white, orange, and black, have unique genetic patterns and are predominantly female. This is also true for tortoiseshell cats.
Calicos and tortoiseshell cats (commonly known as “Torties”) are similar, with calicos having more white and orange, while torties have more black or gray.
Ginger cats or orange cats are predominantly male. A ginger cat is in general very temperamental and is called “ginga ninja”.
White cats, especially with blue eyes, can be deaf. If they have one blue and one brown eye, they might be deaf on the blue-eye side. (oh how I love white cats, especially if they have blue eyes but I guess I will never own one as all my cats get picked up from the streets).
White cats only are about 5% of the cat population…
People have experienced cats being born completely white and gaining patterns and colors as they get older! This has been reported mostly with Siamese cats and Himalayan cats.
Several people who shaved their cats for a CT scan or surgery claimed that the pattern on their skin matched the pattern of their fur.
Cats are among the 44 predators with vertically slit pupils, which helps in hunting.
Hairless cats, such as Sphynxes, are known to leave grease marks due to their natural skin oils.
Many cats on the East Coast have six toes, a trait known as polydactylism.
In a single litter of kittens, it’s possible for each kitten to have a different father.
Cats have eyelashes! This was so weird for me to discover.
Cats have a third eyelid, known as the nictitating membrane.
Cat Behaviors: From Quirks to Instincts
Some male cats will let kittens suckle them – and may I add this is not even rare, I have seen many photos from cat owners of this strange behavior.
Cats can recognize their favorite blanket (sometimes after years). I have experienced the same with my cat’s favorite toy, it loved it the most when it was a kitten and it always recognizes it, even though it is destroyed from playing with it. And just because it always recognizes it I don’t throw it away.
Many cats can play fetch (just like dogs) if the ball is small enough to pick up in their mouth. One of my cat’s favorite games is to play fetch with me, I throw a little soft ball and she runs for it and brings it back to me. Sometimes I find a ball in my bed when I wake up, that is my cat trying to play with me at night lol
Cats express emotions with their eyes – and sometimes my cat can make me feel guilty or embarrassed or even stop me from doing something, all just by the way it looks at me. I used to light up a cigarette at home when I was extremely stressed out, but I couldn’t stand the way she stared at me, as if she knew it was not good for me, so I completely stopped doing it!
They can’t talk but their tone of voice is very indicative of what they are actually trying to “say”. Some cats even attempt to replicate human speech.
This is from me: when cats want something they go for it until they get it. They just repeat the same thing over and over until you succumb. That’s why people say cats can’t be trained, they just don’t understand no, like they will stop for a while and then start all over again. In short: cats are known for their remarkable determination and persistence.
Some cats can be overprotective, meaning their behavior can be described as “resource guarding”, with the human being the resource.
Some people prefer cats over dogs, due to the high-maintenance nature of dogs of all ages. Cats are very easy to maintain, once they pass their kitten period of learning things.
Many cats enjoy sleeping under covers, seeking warmth and comfort.
Some cats can snore while they sleep, (a snoring cat is quite funny to imagine).
Some pet cats enjoy going on walks, often following their owners and dogs.
Cats are crepuscular animals, meaning they are most active during dawn and dusk.
Cats, known for their self-cleaning habits, groom themselves thoroughly, including their rear areas 🙂
Cats often refuse to use a litter box if it’s dirty.
A Bit Ironic Statements
Cats own the home and they just let us stay there – obviously, the more cats you have the worse it gets 🙂
Having cats is like having a sugar baby, you spend your money on them and they give you in return a little attention and cuddles.
They will poop (or pee) in your plant’s pot if they want to…
Cats act like they can’t hear you, but they’re just ignoring you. ( I had to highlight this as it is 100% true, like when I call my cat and she just looks at me until I give up and THEN she comes to me, and I know it is on purpose. She also loves to paw bump my face the minute I fall asleep, yes I know she enjoys waking me up and annoying me at the same time).
Understanding Feline Dietary Preferences
Cats can be picky eaters. My older cat never eats fish food which is very unusual for a cat.
Cats might not taste sweets the same way we do, they actually can’t taste sweetness as they don’t have the taste receptors for it – my Puffy loves ice cream but according to the internet, it is probably something else that she likes in it and not exactly the sweetness.
Most cats are naturally lactose intolerant
Never give chocolate to cats – it’s extremely toxic for them.
Cats prefer fresh water, often from a faucet or fountain, over water sitting in a bowl.
Health Concerns in Cats
Scented plugins/air fresheners and scented candles can be problematic and even deadly for cats. They may experience allergy or asthma issues.
Most essential oils are toxic to cats. I have seen many people report this so really be careful before you decide on using them and make sure you research their effect on a cat’s health well before using one.
Although cats love warmth, keep your cats cool in the summer. It’s not good for them to be in temperatures over 90 degrees.
Cats can get tired of their whiskers touching the sides of a bowl. It is best to use shallow bowls for their food.
To give a cat a pill, put it in their mouth and then rub their lips. They’ll lick and swallow it.
Lilies and poinsettias are very toxic to cats, so keep them away. Be careful with house plants around cats, as many of them can be toxic.
Cats are susceptible to sunburns, particularly on exposed areas and especially light-colored cats. White cats need sunscreen on their noses and ears to protect them from skin cancer.
Many cats are lactose intolerant, so dairy products should be given with caution.
Some cats have large black patches inside their mouths, a harmless condition.
Whisker fatigue in cats can lead to behavioral problems and discomfort. “Whisker fatigue” in cats, a non-scientific term, refers to the idea that cats can experience sensory overload from overstimulation of their highly sensitive whiskers.
All dry food kills their urinary tract system and gives them kidney disease, so please mix wet food or even human food with dry cat food.
Declawing cats is akin to removing the tops of human fingers and can leave them defenseless, especially if they accidentally get outdoors.
Busting Common Cat Myths
Many people expressed their surprise that some cats are not being affected by catnip, acknowledging that their experience isn’t universal. Kittens might not react to catnip until they reach one year of age.
Cats can live to be over 20.
Some cats do like belly rubs, but only from people they fully trust. (most cats are too protective over their bellies and hate being touched there).
Cats are known to choose their human, and this may not be the one who gives them the most attention or even feeds them.
Although it is a general rule that cats don’t like water, some cats are intrigued by various sources of water, including a fountain, appliances, and the shower.
Cats are just as loving and affectionate as dogs, they just show it differently.
Each cat is unique, with its own distinct character and personality.
Cats and Humans
Relaxing with a cat is great. It can even lower your blood pressure. I love sleeping with my two cats, it is so peaceful, as if there are no problems and this world is just a soft, sleepy place to enjoy.
Cat owners often wake up multiple times a night because of the loud noise of a too playful cat, food or simply cat seeking attention. Also, if you like sleeping late in the day you have to train your cat not to wake you up very early in the morning.
A cat’s body is usually about 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius warmer than a human’s. That is why cuddling with a cat is so pleasant, they are so warm and soft… just perfect living dolls.
It’s often cat saliva or the dander in cats’ fur, not the fur itself, that causes allergies in humans.
Cats have adorable pads on their paws, often referred to as toe beans and many cat lovers are crazy in love with toe beans.
Cats have an intuitive sense that can detect failing health in humans.
Cats are known to show deep affection and love wholeheartedly.
Cats are known for keeping their owners warm in cold weather. My cat gets incredibly cuddly in wintertime, every night she crawls into my bed around 5 am and sleeps tightly next to me till we get up, I just wish she does this in all seasons, not just when it is cold 🙂
Many black cats are named “Panther” or “Puma”.
The frequency of a cat’s purr is believed to have healing properties. It also works as a therapy to calm you down.
Some people believe cats are like angels in disguise due to their affectionate nature.
Many owners have experienced cats showing interest when they play the guitar or some other musical instrument. There was a very emotional video on YouTube with a pianist and his cat and how tender the cat becomes when he plays the piano, it was truly a heart-melting thing to see.
I have seen many cat lovers expressing gratitude on the internet when someone shares a rescue story (and this is true for all animals in general).
Cats tend to stay close to their owners when they are ill, offering great comfort during this difficult time.
Cats can sense when their owners are feeling depressed or ill. When I am not ok my Puffy comes and sits on my chest purring or pushing its head to my face, and she is not normally a cuddly cat.
Playful Personalities of Cats
Cats, especially kittens, are great at hide-and-seek. They also like hiding behind something, waiting for you to pass by and then jump at you, like a surprise attack.
It’s common for cats to get hyper at night. They love running and jumping around at 3 am!
Cats can be picky with toys, often ignoring even the ones with catnip. We all know that very often a simple cardboard box is more attractive to cats than an expensive cat tree or bed.
A simple tinfoil or paper ball can be a hit with cats, proving that inexpensive toys can be just as entertaining.
Mysterious Cat Habits
Cats often like a simple box more than a fancy bed you buy them.
Cats might beg for food at the neighbor’s house, even if they get gourmet meals at home 🙂
Many cats don’t like their feet being touched. My Puffy hates it when I touch her back paws and of course, I touch them when I want to annoy her 🙂
Some cats can develop a strong affection for dogs.
Cats don’t just purr when they’re happy. They also purr when they’re sick or scared to make themselves feel better. My little cat purred even when it got injections at the vet.
Cats are creatures of habit and prefer following a routine.
Cats can make a variety of sounds, including chirping, often when they’re excited or see birds.
The so called “dribble gene” in cats is not an established scientific term; however, some cats drool as a sign of contentment or due to medical reasons, but the genetic basis for this behavior is not clearly understood.
Cats are known to push off items like candles and pictures from tables if they don’t like them 😀
Cats have a dominant paw. Studies show left for males and right for females.
Catnip does not attract all cats.
Cats are startled by cucumbers, a common internet phenomenon.
Cats Adapting to Technology
Cats can interact with our phones and there are even apps that are developed especially for cats and kittens for their playing pleasure. This can be great for a bored indoor cat to keep its attention for a while.
Feline Intelligence and Learning
Cat’s intelligence (and for animals in general) is often underestimated.
Cats can demonstrate specific behaviors, like rattling door keys to go outside, some cats have even learned how to open a door themselves.
My cat has learned that if she lets me pet her (even if she doesn’t really want to be petted at the moment), after my morning work meetings, I will walk her outside the apartment. When they want to, cats can learn things fast and very well.
Environmental Awareness in Cats
Cats have a unique ability to see and sense things we can’t, with many owners being convinced they can see things from the spirit realm.
There’s a belief that cats can ward off evil spirits and attract good ones.
Cats possess a highly developed sense of smell, often considered better than that of dogs.
They are great for catching flies in summer, chasing away mice and can even help with a rat problem. That is why sailors/pirates always kept cats aboard their boats, as protection from mice.
If you grow catnip in your garden, it will notably attract and excite the neighboring cats – this is very obvious though :)))
Fostering and Adopting Cats
Two cats can be good and close companions. I’ve tried several times to find another cat for my Puffy so that she won’t feel alone or be bored but it has never worked so far. Now I have a little blind kitten and they just started playing with each other, so you have to wait for the right opportunity.
This is what cleaning with cats looks like, she always needs to know everything about every single corner of the house:
